Did you know that only 6% of pilots are female? This insanely low number has held steady for over 60 years!
Every other male dominated field has seen a rise in females, even women aerospace engineers has increased to 9%, but not female pilots.
In a poll conducted by British Airways in 2014, when asked about becoming pilots, 63% of women said they were, “Put off when growing up for reasons like a lack of visible role models and being told it was a man’s job.”
WHERE IT STARTS
By the time a child gets to kindergarten their prejudices are already set. This means we need to target children younger than 5 years old.
Finding Amelia and Ruby's Rocket, targets young girls and offers solid STEM subject matter. Aviation covers science, technology, engineering and math so inclusively that all you need to do is explain how an airplane flies. It’s not magic!
CALL TO ACTION
There needs to be a lot more books about female pilots on our bookshelves, in schools, and at the library.
We need more role models in the spot light!
It's time to lift our girls up even higher and support the next generation of pilots!
